The knowledge of hernias in our country can be traced back to several hundred years ago. Through the continuous efforts of generations of surgeons, China has made significant progress in various aspects of hernia diagnosis and treatment. This includes the development of guidelines and consensus, establishment of standardized training systems, implementation of hernia follow-up systems, and quality control measures. Currently, China is at the forefront of the world in hernia diagnosis and treatment. However, it is also important to recognize that innovative breakthroughs are still needed, particularly in complex hernia cases, such as advancements in abdominal wall reconstruction techniques and the development of repair materials. Material science should be a key focus in achieving the unity of the integrity of abdominal wall structure and function. Of course, we should also be aware of our own shortcomings, such as the need for specialization in hernia care and addressing the varying skill levels of surgeons at the grassroots level. Additionally, efforts should be directed towards effectively integrating technologies such as robotic surgery, artificial intelligence, and 4G networks, in order to further benefit hernia patients in our country.
