From a view of the anatomical relationships between the paraesophageal veins and esophageal veins, the authors have reviewed the related literature and then analyzed the correlations of the paraesophageal veins with the degree of severity and the recurrence of esophageal varices. This paper addresses the related issues, so as to summarize the theoretical basis of the different research findings.
